The History of Brecon RFC Petanque Club

The club was formed in 1988 by Mr Bob Dawe. Bob was instrumental in getting the club up and running. He placed an advertisment in the local paper, the Brecon and Radnor to sound out if there was any interest, to which there was a good response. Bob had previously started a petanque club in Wenvoe which is still going strong today, but he was now concentrating on the Brecon club and he wanted to do the same.

The club started off as the Blue Boar PC with a lot of help from John & Barbara Williams who at the time were the owners of the Blue Boar Pub.

Bob was decleared the first chairman of the club with Austin Jones being the Club Captain. Once the club was established we became affiliated with the Welsh region based in Cardiff. The Blue Boar PC then started to grow and indeed were one of the sides instrumental in founding the Marches Petanque League.

We now play ever Wednesday night during the Summer months which is most enjoyable, and being so close to the English Border the team was lucky enough to be able to play in the Marches League and in Welsh Events.

John & Barbara eventually sold the Blue Boar which has now been taken over by Brecon RFC. We are now know as Brecon RFC PC. The Rugby Club have been 100% supportive towards us and we are extremly grateful for all their help and support.

Brecon RFC PC have played host to many prestigious events and is still one of the main venues for the Welsh PA calender. The Cletic Challenge is one of these with the top players for Scotland, Ireland and Wales competing. Brecon has been lucky enough to hold this tournament three times and is looking forward to being a contender to hold this event in the future.

We are lucky to have sixteen top class pistes to which each club member thanks Bob and Austin for all there time that they put in.

The club shall continue to grow and hopefully we can continue playing, enjoying the game and most of all making new friends.
